Nevsky, Alexander

Prince of Novgorod (r.1236-63). He saved Novgorod from attack by the Mongols in 1240 by becoming their vassal. He was rewarded by appointment as prince of Kiev and grand prince of Vladimir-Suzdal. His submission freed him to concentrate on defeating the Swedes (1240) and Teutonic Knights (1242) who threatened Novgorod from the west.
