Stabilan materijal velike čistoće koji se koristi u titracijama i drugim kemijskim analizama za pripremu otopina točne poznate koncentracije ili za određivanje koncentracije tvari koje reagiraju s primarnim standardnim materijalom. Na primjer, NaCl je primarni standard koji se može koristiti za titracijsko određivanje koncentracije AgNP3 u otopini: NaCl(aq) + AgNO3(aq) = AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq).
