Cicada
A type of insect with transparent, veined wings and large wide-set eyes. There are about 2500 cicada species worldwide. They usually reside in areas with temperate to tropical climates and are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs.
They usually do not harm humans. A rare sting from a cicada can be painful but is not harmful. Cicadas are known for their loud and unique sound, and relatively long bodies. They can be about an inch long.
In May 2011, the cicadas identified as the Great Southern Brood or Brood XIX returned to southern US after a 13-year disappearance. As the adults die off, the children go into hiding again; they usually emerge every 13 to 17 years.
