data furnace

A server or other computational system that uses its heat byproducts to heat a home. The idea aims to solve two problems with a single solution - First, families are finding it harder to heat their homes in winter. Second, data farms and cloud servers require heavy amounts of cooling to dissipate the intense amounts of heat that they generate. By distributing these servers into houses instead, the servers will not need to be cooled (or cooling will be minimal), and families would offset their heating bill with the data generated from the server.

The idea was proposed in June 2011 by a team led by Jie Lu, who estimates such a setup could save up to $300 per year for the server operator alone.
